"Angela's talent to
teach, her personal, sensitive playing, her experience to organize
as well as her charming personality make her a successful and
outstanding teaching and playing personality. As a teaching
assistant at FSU College of Music, Angela was well liked by her
students and colleagues. She is a very intuitive and sensible
teacher and player, and is a great piccoloist." Angela McCuiston was my student at Tennessee Tech University from 1999 to 2003. During her time at TTU she distinguished herself as one of our most outstanding players, performing in the top ensembles on both flute and piccolo. Her playing, like her personality, is effervescent and refreshing, characterized by a beautiful tone quality, mature phrasing and technical prowess. She has returned since
graduation to give master classes to current flute students, proving
herself a fine teacher in addition to her impressive performance
skills.
One thing I liked about her
teaching was her vocabulary of instruction. There were many times
when I would not understand a musical thought or style one way she
explained it. Every time Angela had many other backup ways to
explain her methods so that they were understandable for anyone.
This practice is perhaps her most valuable asset as a teacher.
Mrs. McCuiston performed
for each class and then took the flute sections aside to work with
them in small groups. She addressed tone production, embochure
formation, hand position, and other techniques appropriate for the
level of students being tutored. She did a fine job of holding the
attention of the students involved and it was noticeable over time
the impact of her influence. I would highly recommend Mrs. McCuiston
for similar masterclasses.
